Beach Weekend

Gotta love these awesome beach weekends with friends and family.
I actually saw something at the beach I had never seen before.  The lifegaurd said they were parts of a jellyfish that were dead by the time they reached the shore and they wouldn't sting us (being a previous sting victim, I look to avoid it).  They were so brillant blue and there were just a ton of them washed up all over the shore and floating in the ocean.
Saturday Kate, Elizabeth, and I went to the beach.

Sunday we went down to Ponce Inlet and hung out with some great friends.  It was just an overall wonderful, relaxing, fun filled weekend which I am now recoving from the sunburn,
Elizabeth got to play with her good friend Ethan and Anna Kate got to hang with Liam...sooo cute
Anna Kate and Liam even snuggled in to take a nap together.

King Kong, Godzilla whatever you want to call her, she's ready to strike again.  You build it she'll bring it down.  Elizabeth, the innocent victim totally unaware of the wrath coming.

I could add like 10 more pictures but they are just all beach pictures, so here are my last few favorites.
I hope everyone had a great long weekend and took a moment to remember those who lost their lives while serving our country.
Dance it girl.

The first hair cut

Poor Miss Anna Kate had just a mop of hair that I decided looked like a mad scientist on even some of her best days.  We decided to just break down and take her for the first hair cut.  I made the bad decision of trying to cut Elizabeth's hair for a few months when she was about this size and the poor kid looked like she cut it herself with safety scissors. This was playing it safe for me.
Anna Kate was pretty suspicious from the beginning
The stink eye was coming on...
Who is back there and what are you doing?!
The hair staylist was pretty darn smart and this was not her first rodeo.  She gave AK the water bottle and it was game over, she was lost in another world, mesmerized by it.
It may not look like it but the stylist took off more than an inch on the back and gave the bangs a nice even trim (unlike what I'm capable of).  She even got the sucker for a reward of good behavior.
Anna Kate 0, Hair Stylist 1: we'll see what the next match brings.

Trip to Iowa - part II for sure

So here we are back in Iowa, where "all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average," ok maybe that's Minnesota but whatever.

Ok so really one of my favorite things about visiting is the food.  Happy Joe's Pizza has the ultimate, best, wonderful Taco Pizza.  honestly, I could eat the whole thing by myself.
Love Maid Rite, which are loose meat sandwiches and soooo yummy.  I take mine with cheese, but seriously they are good.  There was a little "shack/lunch place" in Gainesville in the student ghetto that served "Iowa loose meat" sandwiches.  Super good and something you can only really get there.  Mom and Elizabeth were more into the chocolate shake, I think that was the size after they split it and gave me half!

Well darn I don't have a picture of the huge pastries this place sells but the Machine Shed has some enormous size dishes that are Iowa farmer size, mmmmm so good.  Sadly, all I have is pictures of Elizabeth crawling on the huge tractor outside.

The other part I really love...the homes.  I'm not trying to be a historian by any means but just a small snippet of history of the old neighborhood of which I am in love with the old homes.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia :)

The Village of East Davenport (known locally as The Village) is a neighborhood that dates back to the 1850s and was originally known as "Stubb's Eddy". The Village was established in 1851 to service the logging industry, and was annexed by the city in 1857. It experienced three stages of growth: the period following the American Civil War, when many residential buildings were built; from 1890 to 1915, when construction of large mansions on the bluffs (allowing views of the Mississippi River) began; and the turn of the twentieth century, at the far east end of the neighborhood and the city. The houses in The Village were built along the curves of the topography, not in the grid fashion that was used in the rest of the city. Prospect Park was developed from 1895 to 1910, and is one of many Davenport neighborhoods built at the turn of the century to focus around a park. Houses in Prospect Park are very large and are set on spacious lots. They are built in the late Queen Anne, Neoclassical, and Tudor Revival styles.

My favorite part of the history is: In 1856, the first railroad bridge to span the Mississippi River was built between Rock Island and a spot on the Iowa side directly south of The Village. It was of the utmost importance in getting lumber from sawmills to the frontier as far west as Denver. However, when the Effie Afton riverboat hit the bridge, it became the subject of a historic lawsuit between riverboat and railroad, in which a young Illinois lawyer named Abraham Lincoln successfully defended railroad interests. Today, the log trestle still stands as the last tangible remnant of the first railroad west.

So just some of the homes I enjoy in the area:

(this is cheating, this is our old house, part of Prospect Park neighborhood)

I'm guessing there are hundreds of very cool, unique homes in the area and I wish I could actually go up to each one and take a proper picture but you get what my mom would allow with a slow drive by!  If I had it all to do over again I probably should have an architectural history degree and write books.  Big sigh...I'll see you again one day pretty houses.

The trip to Iowa - Maybe part I

My cousin, who lives in Davenport, Iowa just graduated (Go Kristi!) so my mom and I decided it was high time to take Elizabeth to Iowa to meet some of her extended family.  My brother and I were born in Iowa and we lived there till....geez I think we officially moved south in 1981.  So while I have no real memories of living there, I have a very fond affection for the town and just Love some aspects of it..food, historical homes, a lot of the town is civil war era, Von Maur (recieved my package today thank you very much), food, May and October (haha)
So my main concern of the trip was Elizabeth's first plane ride and she was soooo excited.  I happened to snap her face just when the plane took off

She was extremely well behaved and did NOT kick a seat ahead of her, which was seriously my main concern.  She did need a lot of distraction and thought it was a great idea to want to be on the wing of the plane. When we switched planes in Atlanta I bought her the biggest cookie I could find, just to keep her mouth full.
So we finally landed in Moline, Ill, which is part of the Quad Cities and just a quick hop over the Mississippi and we were in Davenport.
Mom says the bridge is a mile long but it seems like it just goes on forever.
One of our first stops was to visit the old neighborhood and show Elizabeth her grandparents old house and where I lived for a very short while.  She didn't care. But she did seem to really like Prospect Park and was just loving the wild flowers.  The park is to the right of our old house and the homes just circle the park overlooking the river...so sweet and beautiful.  I think the reason why I like the town so much is that I rarely visit other than May or October, two of the best times to visit.
I will have to continue with the update tomorrow, lots of cute pictures to show...

We got flocked

The American Cancer Society had the Annual Relay for Life recently and as part of raising money you could pay money to flock your friends.  So we got hit, it had to happen way after midnight but the girls had such a great time riding them the next day it was great entertainment.  This should be something that parents invest in for week long activities for the kids.

Messing with the baby

Ok, so Anna Kate is totally scared of this purple bracelet spongy fluffy thing.  Normally you see them as balls that are kind of squishy and have all the little spiny things that are soft.  So of course the next best thing is to put it on all of Anna Kate's favorite things just to see her react, a la Skinner
First her sippy cup.

Then her pacifier
I tried to get her to grab it for as long as I could.  She was soooo unhappy with me.
But at last success, she conquers her fears and goes on to become a major world leader.
